Practice

I just found out that I might be losing my job as a result of the new U.S. president’s horrific new policies. As I’m starting to think about what I would like to do next with my life, I’ve been thinking a lot about practice.

You only get better at things by doing them a lot. During the time when I took these photos of Sara, I was shooting all the time. She was one of my most frequent subjects during this era, though I didn’t end up doing any full shoots with her. At the time, I was just practicing, doing lots of test shoots to refine my work and play with light and shapes.

This was one of the most productive tests we had, and there are many other photos from this day that I absolutely love. But one of the skills I was also trying to develop was to make my work more commercial looking, and to limit what I was producing. Sadly I’ve removed a lot of my work from this site in a misguided attempt at self-censorship to have broader appeal, but looking back I love what I was creating.

These aren’t perfect by any means. There’s no professional hair or makeup. They’re not retouched. The outfit here is a hodgepodge of what the model happened to be wearing that day combined with whatever sparked my interest - in this case, a pair of high waisted latex panties. But I feel that these perfectly captured the mood that day. And you can see the smallest glimpse of Sara’s mischeviousness.
