I started shooting tethered with Capture One a while back, and it’s dramatically improved my workflow. The ability to see the images I’m shooting, full-size, immediately, has radically changed the way I approach my work. Setting up lighting is a lot easier, too.
I do all of my work on a Mac, and the Apple Remote is underpurposed at best. Or it was, until I discovered the neat little Remote Buddy program. It captures button presses from the remote and turns them into commands for the currently active program. By default, it allows the Play button to take a shot with Capture One – meaning you can do remote triggering on your tethered setup.
It’s actually a lot of fun to work this way, and it physically frees you up even more from your setup. I still take the camera in hand for more active shooting, but for staged setups, you can’t beat it!

Aside from the freezing cold weather, this was really fun to shoot. My friend Joy Wang made this incredible cage dress-bodice thing out of boning, with detachable shoulder pads, hips cages, and codpiece.
This turned out better than I ever could have hoped, both due to having an amazing team and really wonderful natural light. The whole shoot only took about an hour altogether, including travel time between locations.

We made a quick run out to Tandy Leather in Richmond this weekend to pick up a few odds and ends. I ended up finding some nice shoulder hide that would work for a couple of different projects, but at $10 per square foot, it was a bit on the pricey side. The really helpful staff suggested that I get a wholesale account, since that would knock the price down by about 40%. Score!
